After learning about 12 notes, their sequence, and about octaves/saptak, we are ready to learn about our own voice, our own pitch/scale. We should know in what pitch will my voice sound good, as well as how can I increase my range. In this lesson, we will cover how to find your right pitch. Every voice is unique, and that is the gift that everyone has gotten from the ultimate creator. One voice is not similar to another voice, that is its speciality. So instead of comparing our voice to somebody else's, if we try to identify our voice (type), then we will enjoy our singing much more. And if do our riyaz/practice in that same pitch, it will benefit our vocal health a lot more in the long run. Primarily there are two types of voices, male voice, and female voice. In each voice type, some voices have more base, and some are sharper. There is also a voice in between, called mid voice. Males generally start their vocal practice in scale C# (kaali ek in harmonium). If your voice has more base, then you maybe can start with scale C (safed ek). If you feel your voice is sharper, then you can go higher slowly such scale D (safed do), D# (kaali do), E, etc. Hence, generally males sing in C#, D, D#. There can be exceptions to this, based on one's voice type but most voices fall in these pitches. Females generally sing in G#, A, A#, B. Females who have a bassy voice, can start with G# scale. If your voice is sharper, then go bit higher to pitch A, A#. Once you understand your pitch, you should practice in that pitch (most of the time). In this series, for males we will learn in C# scale and for females, in A# scale.
